I usually don't have problems wearing a regular size 13 but I usually get a wide when they are available. I ordered a 13 wide yet my toes still get crammed up to the front while I'm walking around yet not so much when I'm just standing around. With any other size 13 shoe I've tried on I have at least not had my toes reach the very front. This leads me to believe that these run a little small, I would go with a 1/2 size to a full size larger if you usually fill out a 13 fairly well. I figured these would fit well since I also have Merrell trail gloves (These also have Vibram soles.) that are 13 wide and fit perfectly. Can't return them now. I've made the mistake of thinking I could break em in.Friggin hot spots jeeeeez. Got em on both of my Achilles. I started putting duct tape on my skin to prevent the hot spots during the break in process but it would still dig in pretty good. I walked around on campus a couple days, took em on a short trail walk and used them at work for a couple days and they barely got better. I started crushing and flexing the boot around the hot spots as much as I could before I wore them again. This actually helped a little more.
I admit that the hot spot could be happening because the boot is not a proper fit for my foot but when I settle my heel into the spot where it should be it just feels like that leather in the back goes up to high past the bend in my ankle and causes the hot spot.
I might try to buy these again at a later date with a size larger because I see the potential in these boots. It just pisses me off that these run small and are so hard to break in. If i can get the hot spot out in a reasonable amount of usage I might bump this up to four stars. If not, I might come back here and knock it down a peg.
UPDATE 07/11/2013
As of a few months ago there are no more hot spots. You definitely have to be patient with these boots. Do what I did; flex them, crush them, and jump on them until they soften up before you start to put them on and break them in further by wearing them. (Do this mostly around that ankle support crap they put on these boots.) You'll save yourself some pain and band-aids.
The boots still feel small but not like when I first got them. I still recommend you buy a 1/2 to 1 size larger.
The soles seem to last and the leather is holding up. No tears and the sole is staying attached to the boot.
I still recommend them since there are no other nearly zero heel to toe drop combat style boots around this price range that I know of. Work around the hot spots, get a size above and everything will be fine.
