I love these boots! The plus size calf fits, but just barely, so I would recommend double checking the measurements if you have a particularly large calf. Fortunately, the buckles do adjust slightly, so that helps. They otherwise fit true to size and they look great.

Bates Men's Gx-8 GTX Insulated Side Zip Combat Boot,Black,10.5 M US Review

In my daily activities, I cover a wide variety of terrain types (urban, forest, snow, etc.). Thus, there are several features which I require in any pair of boots. These boots combine three of the most important of these features: (1) waterproof, (2) insulated, (3) breathable. Few combat boots have all three of these features.

The waterproofing is an especially useful feature. Besides obviously keeping my feet dry in rainy weather, it's useful in forest terrain where it allows me to walk right through streams and shallow rivers.

The Gore-Tex lining makes the boots breathable, which keeps your feet dry even after wearing the boots for long periods of time. The 200g Thinsulate insulation is pretty effective at keeping your feet warm, although in below-freezing conditions it's best to wear socks made of synthetic wool. (I've worn these boots for up to 8 hours at temperatures down to 10�F/-12�C, and they've performed quite well.)

Initially, I was skeptical of the side zipper. But it has turned out to be quite useful, at least when taking the boots off; when the boots are snugly laced-up, it's hard to put them on using the side zipper alone.

At first, these boots gave me minor blisters. But since I broke them in, they've been very comfortable - even when worn for upwards of 18 hours.

The one downside to these boots is that they lack a reinforced toe. (Cf. the related model, Bates� GX-8 Gore-Tex� Composite Safety - toe Boots)

This is simply a great shoe. It is supportive but does not interfere with feeling the ground. I use it to cross train and while it is not cushioned I feel very secure and able to jump, lift and balance any weight in any direction. Excellent shoe for training your body in multiple planes of motion. It doesn't matter if I'm doing deadlifts, plyometrics, or single leg balance exercises, this shoe keeps me focused on what's important and not what's on my feet.

I am a trainer and coach and have used lots of different shoes including top of the line Nike, Adidas, etc. I am always picking these up for use in my studio.

On another note: I truly respect Scarpa as a company: the quality that they build into each and every product shows in every detail. There's a lot of stuff produced in Asia right now that is more expensive and falls apart in 8 months. If you are particular and like solid, functional design, you will like Scarpa's products and these shoes.

For some reason the insole is not attached to the sides of the shoe, so if you have wider feet, your foot would slide over into the gap between the insole and the side of the shoe, and the edge of the insole would dig into the sole of your foot, like it did with mine. Not a very comfortable experience, and not even something you notice after a few hours - I was walking around my living room, and felt the pain straight away.

I have never had shoes that were like this - and given OTBT is known for comfortable, practical shoes, I'm baffled as to how they could have made such an obvious design error.

The shoes look nice though, and give you a nice height boost. I can tell that once worn in, they would be quite comfortable - just not for people with wider feet! I will be returning these.

My search for comfortable walking shoes continues.

This is a decent shoe but a poor replacement for the 1012 as New Balance claims that it is. This shoe has nowhere near the support that the 1012 had. I have an ankle that is held together with a plate and screws and need as much support from a shoe as I can get. The 1012 was the best I ever had. I am very disappointed that New Balance stopped production of that shoe and replaced it with this one. Unfortunately I am going to have to start trying other brands now.
