I recently bought these Salomon Synapse "run your hike" (as Salomon refers to them) shoes to use for speed hiking. I suspect they'll work well for that purpose. The fit is very good, with plenty of room in the toe box for my toes to splay out. I used them a few days after my purchase in the Megatransect Ultrahike. The Mega is a rugged mountain hike - nearly 6000' elevation gain (good for PA) - in central PA over very (VERY!!) rocky terrain. The Synapses worked perfectly for my use. I hiked most of the race with a little running on the flatter, less rocky stretches. The sole construction afforded great grip on the rocks, good traction on the soft stuff, and great striding comfort. These are not a stout shoe so don't even think about backpacking with them! Also, they have no waterproof membrane so your feet will get wet in a hurry if you step in a deep puddle or shallow stream. The jury is out on the durability but I don't expect them to be long-lived if used in Mega-like terrain on a regular basis. If you want great durability, go with an American- or Italian made leather boot.
