I've been a fan of New Balance shoes for years (20+). It seems, however, that they are going the way of many other brands (slowly reducing the quality of their product). I used to wear New Balance exclusively (cross trainers, running and even dress shoes). One by one, though, the quality has diminished and I have ceased wearing them until finally I was down to one shoe that I still really liked (the 940).

I have worn the 940 since it came out and was very pleased with the shoe. I typically went through 3 pairs per year due to a relatively high mileage routine. When the 940V2 came out I got a pair. Within six miles my right foot was sore. Upon inspection I found that the insole of the shoe was curling (and tearing), from the side, and rolling under my foot. In that short time it was beyond repair. Needles to say I returned the shoe.

I went to a New Balance store and pointed out the flaw in the shoe to the representative (run your finger down the inside of the shoe, near the heel, and it will catch the insole and begin to curl). He stated that he could get a different pair of insoles for the shoe to resolve the issue. I politely declined since I find it rather irritating to repair a brand new shoe in order to make them fit to wear.

I tried to find stores that were still selling the older model 940's but it seems everyone else had the same idea. Now, for the first time in 20 years I'll be shopping for a new brand. Kinda stinks......
